3.3 million tonnes of fish caught by EU fleet in 2023

In 2023, the full EU fish catch was an estimated 3.3 million tonnes (t) of dwell weight from the 7 marine areas lined by EU statistics. This continued the downward development in catches since 4.6 million tonnes was taken in 2018.

Spain’s fishing fleet accounted for barely greater than one-fifth of all EU catches in 2023 (21%; 698 000 t), adopted by Denmark (15%; 495 000 t) and France (14%; 470 000 t).

Round 72% of the full EU catch was taken within the Northeast Atlantic space. The important thing species caught on this space have been herring (18%), blue whiting (16%), sprat (13%) and mackerel (10%). About one-fifth of the EU’s complete dwell weight catch on this space was taken by Denmark’s fishing fleet (21%), adopted by France’s (15%) and Spain’s (11%).

Virtually 10% of the full EU catch was taken within the Mediterranean and Black Sea, the place the principle species caught have been sardines (19%) and anchovies (18%). The Italian fleet took 37% of the EU catch on this space, adopted by Greece (20%), Croatia (18%) and Spain (17%).

Catches within the Western Indian Ocean space accounted for six% of the full EU catch. The overwhelming majority (94%) of the full dwell weight caught by the EU fishing fleet was tuna, notably skipjack and yellowfin tuna. About two thirds of the EU catch within the space was taken by Spain’s fleet (68%), with a lot of the relaxation by France (30%).

One other 6% of the full EU catch was taken within the Japanese Central Atlantic space. The principle catches on this space have been horse mackerel and skipjack tuna (every 21%) adopted by yellowfin tuna (13%) and mackerel (11%). Amongst EU nations, Spain (40%), France (16%) and the Netherlands (11%) accounted for a lot of the catches on this space.

Solely 6% of the full EU catch was taken in 3 remaining marine areas. The principle species caught in these areas have been the next: hake and squid (Southwest Atlantic space), blue sharks, skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna (Southeast Atlantic space) and redfish, halibut and cod (Northwest Atlantic space).
